Bringing Beauty Meister-Pet to the US

A native of Niigata, Japan, with her MBA and with a certification in aromatherapy in hand, Kana Hotani became President and CEO of Koukin Meister Co, Ltd. in 1988. Although the company had excellent technology, it was close to going bankrupt because it didn’t have a good way to sell its products. Wanting to turn things around, Kana stepped in with a mission to rebuild the company and give it a fresh start.

Koukin Meister had developed powerful antibacterial technology using high-performance alkaline ionized water and water-soluble metal ion complexes, created in-house. With this, Kana led the development of a wide range of products. These included pet deodorizers, gardening supplies, wet wipes, underwear, stationery, and even tools—many of which were sold under private labels by major retailers in Japan. Under her leadership, the company also expanded into other countries in Asia, such as Vietnam, Taiwan, and China.

Kana’s approach to product development has always been practical. She believes in solving real problems that users face. Every product is thoughtfully designed, taking into account the materials used, how people will use it, and what customers actually need.

During her studies, Kana learned important lessons about growing a research-focused company. She talks about three major stages that such companies must pass through. The first is the “Valley of Death,” where a company needs to successfully develop its core technologies. The second is the “Chasm of Despair,” which is about creating products that truly meet customer needs. The third is the “Darwinian Sea,” where only companies that continue to take risks and evolve can survive.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted Koukin Meister’s client base. Kana and her team responded by creating their own consumer-facing brand: Odorculus. This new line allowed them to showcase their expertise and build something they could take pride in—not just for clients, but for themselves.

Now, Odorculus is spreading its wings internationally. It is entering the U.S. market under the new name Beauty Meister, offering a collection of all-natural, water-based hygiene, cleaning, and deodorizing solutions that are safe for both pets and people. Built on years of scientific research and driven by care, Beauty Meister brings Kana’s mission full circle—delivering powerful, toxin-free products to families, their pets and households around the world.
